Profile: South-african jazz combo founded in the early 1960s in Cape Town. As an interracial band in a country where apartheid ruled, they faced a lot of difficulties to play their music, so after an appearance at the 1964 Antibes Jazz Festival in France, the group decided to stay in Europe and the musicians eventually moved to London. Their activity as Blue Notes was then sporadic, they were eventually integrated into the jazz scene of London and played with, and formed several other bands with local musicians, notably Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath. Blue Notes is an album by American jazz saxophonist Johnny Hodges and orchestra featuring performances recorded in 1966 and released on the Verve label.

The Blue Notes were a South African jazz sextet, whose definitive line up featured Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Dudu Pukwana on alto saxophone, Nikele Moyake on tenor saxophone, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. After moving away from their home country in 1964, they established themselves on the European jazz circuit, where they continued to play and record through the 1970s. They are now considered one of the great free jazz bands of their era, whose music was given a unique flavour by their integration of African styles such as Kwela into the progressive. The Blue Notes left South Africa in 1964 for an engagement at the Antibes Jazz Festival in France. Moyake was forced home by ill-health shortly afterwards; the others stayed. Moholo-Moholo returned home in 2005. Despite international acclaim, he found performance space for his adventurous concepts in South Africa as scarce as it had ever been. Meanwhile, the recordings and achievements of the Blue Notes remained obscure in South Africa, while they are legendary in the European jazz community. His project is just one flower of a slow growing interest in recovering the legacy that seems finally to be breaking into bloom. In Europe, the Blue Notes startled staid jazz scenes.
