Samuel "Sam" Ervin Beam (born July 26, 1974), better known by his stage and recording name Iron & Wine, is an American singer-songwriter. He has released six studio albums, several EPs and singles, as well as a few download-only releases, which include a live album (a recording of his 2005 Bonnaroo performance). He occasionally tours with a full band. Beam was raised in South Carolina before moving to Virginia and then Florida to attend school. He now resides in Durham, North Carolina.

Joy For an album that actually peaked in the Top 10 on the Billboard Rock charts, 2013’s Ghost on Ghost contained a few songs that didn’t necessarily fit into Beam’s self-described, AM radio-influenced fifth studio LP. Joy is one of those songs. In fewer than three minutes, Beam extolls the tumultuous journey of falling in love, admitting, I’m only frightened ‘cause you finally gave me something to lose. In fact, the album title comes from a lyric in this song. Leave it to Beam to write a song about trying to appreciate the tiniest moments in our fleeting lives. 4. Norfolk is a live album by Iron & Wine released on April 18, 2009, Record Store Day. However it was recorded on June 20, 2005. The session was recorded at The Norva in Norfolk, VA as a date on Iron & Wine's 2005 Woman King Tour. It features a full band as well as Samuel Beam's sister, Sarah Beam, providing backing vocals. The album features 5 of the 6 songs on the Woman King EP as well as a few songs from the debut album The Creek Drank the Cradle.

In 2005, Iron & Wine began to evolve from Sam Beam's sleepy bedroom recordings into a fully functioning folk-rock band.
