Rock'n'roll" was the final album recorded by Vanilla Fudge during their creative days in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Further albums would be released in the name of Vanilla Fudge, but it is to their first incarnation we must look for their significance in the prog timeline. The band went out on something of a high with an album of largely original material.

Vanilla Fudge started focusing more on their European exposure in 1969. Unfortunately, I don't have the many European itineraries from that year yet. Certainly the band was more popular in Europe and Australia than they ever were on the West Coast. In Italy the Fudge became the first Rock & Roll band to ever win the coveted Golden Gondola Award for their vocals at the Venice festival. On February 2, 1969, the Fudge performed Shotgun live on the Ed Sullivan show. The musical symmetry of the Fudge album was almost schizophrenic, and hence captured the fullest essence of those times. Psychedelia had given way to madness and overindulgence by 1969.

Vanilla Fudge Rock & Roll (Atco Records 1969). Formed 1966 in Long Island, New York and initially called the Pigeons, Vanilla Fudge arrived at a time when rock musicians were exploring virgin frontiers to the point where weird and wild became the standard practice. But Vanilla Fudge’s philosophy and approach stemmed from an entirely different dimension altogether. Vanilla Fudge were dynamic singers and musicians, and their amazing chops really shine through on this album. Powered by bellowing vocals, flaming with intent, Need Love and Street Walking Woman sizzle and squawk to the beat of hard rocking hullabaloo. Grungy guitars grapple with pile-driving percussion, culminating in a tone that is ugly and distorted, but bleeding with integrity.
