Hermann Prey was one of the greatest German baritones of the 20th century. A specialist of Mozart's operatic roles and of German Lieder, over the course of his career he gave numerous recitals around the globe. In 1962 he was award with the honorary title of Kammersänger ("Chamber Singer"), one of the highest distinctions to which Germand and Austrian singers can aspire. In August 2014 young Swiss tenor Mauro Peter gave a highly acclaimed Lieder recital at the famous Schubert festival "Schubertiade" in Schwarzenberg, Austria. On the program: famous Schubert songs on poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Such was the succes, that Swiss radio DRS2 Kultur immediately took the decision to record this unique recital and asked SONY CLASSICAL to participate in a co-production of the album. His collaborators have included Irmgard Seefried, Rita Streich, Ileana Cotrubas, Hermann Prey, Hans Hotter, Olaf Bär, Anne-Sofie von Otter, Josef Protschka, Peter Schreier, Bernd Weikl, Brigitte Fassbaender, Keith Lewis, Boje Skovhus, Barbara Bonney, and Jonas Kaufmann. Deutsch is a professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich.

Prey has a strong, forthright, operatic baritone with a curious larmoyant quality, and he has preserved his youthful strength of voice without audible deterioration. His timbre seems to have darkened slightly over the years, however. This allows him to sing Schubert's grander, more masculine songs - like ''Prometheus,'' which he offered last night - in a manner far preferable to the hollow bluster Mr. Fischer-Dieskau must muster in the same repertory. Mr. Prey's program was devoted entirely to Schubert settings of poetry by Goethe, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the poet's death. The songs ranged from 1814 to 1822 and covered the widest possible spectrum of moods, from the dark and tragic to the lyrical and loving to narrative parables to cosmic philosophizing.
