The Stone Roses is the debut studio album by English rock band the Stone Roses. It was recorded mostly at Battery Studios in London with producer John Leckie from June 1988 to February 1989 and released in May of that year by Silvertone Records. The Stone Roses was not an immediate success, but grew popular with the band's high-profile concert performances, which also helped establish them as fixtures of the Madchester and baggy cultural scenes.

On first listen, The Stone Roses is a strangely old-fashioned album. Brown's multi-tracked vocals (he was never a strong singer) mix pleasantly with Squire's chiming Rickenbacker to produce a very mellow, 60s West Coast vibe. But if you get insisde the heart of songs like "I Wanna Be Adored" and "I Am The Resurrection" there's that unmistakeable swagger and defiance that was to prove such a template for Oasis a few years later. Certainly it was Squire who took the band into essentially 'freak-out' territory, especially on the wah-wah'n'drum work out at the end of "I Am The Resurrection", and it was he who sank the follow-up with his adoration of Jimmy Page. But as an accurate picture of how working class hedonism fused dance and rock in the dying days of the 80s, this album is unbeatable. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Licence.

The Stone Roses achieved one of the most successful fusions of classic Pop songwriting and Acid House culture, and managed to snare fans from both genres. By the end of 1989, their debut landed on many Top Ten lists for that year. Though the band never realized the same triumphs on their second and final album, repercussions of their debut album's classic pop songwriting and bright riffs could be heard well into the next decade.

In 2012 the Stone Roses announced their reunion tour. Aged 19, I was excited by the opportunity to see one of the most influential acts of the early ’90s live. As the crowd gathered to witness the band’s return to the stage, enthusiastic festival-goers pushed towards to barriers. As a young man growing up in England The Stone Roaes were our band and their first album the soundtrack to our lives. Many shows back then were dogged with bad sound (spike island) bad performances (many second coming gigs) but still they were a special band. Fast forward a lifetime and now living in NY I was giddy with excitement at seeing them again now with my son who is the age I was when they first banged the drums.

Since the Stone Roses were the nominal leaders of Britain's "Madchester" scene - an indie rock phenomenon that fused guitar pop with drug-fueled rave and dance culture - it's rather ironic that their eponymous debut only hints at dance music. What made the Stone Roses important was how they welcomed dance and pop together, treating them as if they were the same beast. Equally important was the Roses' cool, detached arrogance, which was personified by Ian Brown's nonchalant vocals. Brown's effortless malevolence is brought to life with songs that equal both.
