Description

The Stone Roses first album Released 2 May 1989.

The Stone Roses is the debut studio album by English rock band the Stone Roses. It was recorded mostly at Battery Studios in London with producer John Leckie from June 1988 to February 1989 and released in May of that year by Silvertone Records. The Stone Roses was not an immediate success, but grew popular with the band's high-profile concert performances, which also helped establish them as fixtures of the Madchester and baggy cultural scenes.

The Stone Roses, who released their landmark debut album 30 years ago this week, did both. No band today would dare to combine pop and politics as they did ( Hats off to Gerry Adams, was the first thing they said when playing a comeback concert in Cork in 1995), and the songs – I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall, I Am the Resurrection – detonated like psychedelic firebombs. That swagger, cocksure with bells on, would become the default for British rock through the Nineties. Producer Hank Shocklee creates a hard-edged sound from samples that pay homage to soul greats such as James Brown and Isaac Hayes, and Flavor Flav gives it an unmistakeable zest. There are albums where the myth can transcend the music – not on Illmatic, where Nas vaulted himself into the ranks of the greatest MCs in 1994, with an album that countless artists since have tried – and failed – to emulate.

On first listen, The Stone Roses is a strangely old-fashioned album. Brown's multi-tracked vocals (he was never a strong singer) mix pleasantly with Squire's chiming Rickenbacker to produce a very mellow, 60s West Coast vibe. But if you get insisde the heart of songs like "I Wanna Be Adored" and "I Am The Resurrection" there's that unmistakeable swagger and defiance that was to prove such a template for Oasis a few years later. It's also this strange friction between old and new that makes this album so durable. Certainly it was Squire who took the band.

The Stone Roses, ‘The Stone Roses’. For a few glorious moments, the Stone Roses looked like they might lead another British Invasion. Instead, they fell apart – but first they made this incredible album, highlighted by the ecstatic eight-minute-long I Am the Resurrection. It single-handedly launched Nineties Brit pop. Listen here. King’s first album for the Stax label combines his hard, unflashy guitar playing with the sleek sound of the label’s house band, Booker T. and the MG’s. Hits such as Crosscut Saw and Laundromat Blues earned King a new rock & roll audience.

We had a good time doing that album, and I think it shows in the music. He always did that, right through 'Fool's Gold', up until the second album. In fact, part of the reason for the breakdown of that second album was that John would sit in his bedroom with the Fostex while the rest of us waited in the studio for his guitar parts. He wouldn't improvise or make something up in the studio, but he got to the stage where he was really good. The Fostex was also responsible for the Stone Roses album track 'Don't Stop', which evolved from the 16-track demo of 'Waterfall' being played backwards. The Discipline Of Tape. Piecemeal in nature, the recording approach for 'Fools Gold' was totally different to that employed for the album. The Best Possible Sound. According to Leckie, 'Fools Gold' evolved as the sessions progressed, especially the song's second half.

Since the Stone Roses were the nominal leaders of Britain's "Madchester" scene - an indie rock phenomenon that fused guitar pop with drug-fueled rave and dance culture - it's rather ironic that their eponymous debut only hints at dance music. What made the Stone Roses important was how they welcomed dance and pop together, treating them as if they were the same beast. Equally important was the Roses' cool, detached arrogance, which was personified by Ian Brown's nonchalant vocals. Brown's effortless malevolence is brought to life with songs that equal both.
