Description

Recorded during His Holiness the sixteenth Karmapa's first tour of North America in 1974.

The Life of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. Every Karmapa manifests remarkable qualities. According to the needs of their students and society in general they demonstrate aspects of the nature of enlightenment. The life and legacy of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa lives on through his reincarnation, Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. The remarkable life story of His Holiness the 16th Karmapa is presented here. Thus the sixteenth Karmapa was recognised. He was a child of extraordinary natural insight; if horses or cattle were missing from the area he could always give an exact description of the place where they could be found. When Karmapa was seven years old, Situ Tulku and Jamgon Kongtrul Tulku visited the palace and performed his primary ordination.

The sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (August 14, 1924 – November 5, 1981) (Wylie Rang 'byung rig pa'i rdo rje) was spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Denkhok in the Dergé district of Kham (Eastern Tibet), near the Dri Chu or Yangtze River

The sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (August 14, 1924–November 5, 1981) was spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The simple presence of Karmapa would create a profound and lasting blessing on all people coming into contact with him. He himself said that a Buddha should be known by his laugh and it was said that when Karmapa laughed, which he did all the time, one would hear him several houses away.

His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje: The Karmapa is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Karmapa was born in Lhasa in May 1983 and was given the name Tenzin Kyentse by his parents. His father is the third Mipham Rinpoche, an important lama of the Nyingma tradition. His mother, Dechen Wangmo, comes from a noble Tibetan family, which traces its roots back to the fabled King Ling Gesar.

His Holiness Karmapa took up residence in Sikkim, renovated an old monastery at Rumtek, and soon became renowned as one of the most extraordinary spiritual masters of the twentieth century. Through the realization of his innate Buddha Nature, the Sixteenth Karmapa reflected our own innate Buddha-ness. So many people, including the most erudite Tibetan scholars, were astonished by his direct, intimate, irresistible and inexpressible mind-to-mind, heart-to-heart spiritual resuscitation - so rare in this world today, so subtle, esoteric and even legendary, if not mythical.

The annual Karmapa Public Course will be live-streamed from the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) in New Delhi, from 11-18 March 2019. Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, invites all students around the world to join him online to explore the Buddha dharma together. The Sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa wrote a Guru Yoga-Sadhana, a short practice that is easy to carry out. Therefore it is a very skilful method, seeing Karma Pakshi-Guru Yoga is quite complex. There’s also the Guru Yoga practice of Ngöndro. One’s Root Guru, who is indivisible with His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa. It is important to appreciate and realize that one’s Root Guru is exceptional and that it’s not at all proper and is actually very disrespectful to see him just like one sees a usual friend. Lacking pure faith and devotion in the wondrous qualities of one’s Root Guru, a follower can have strange ideas, for instance, by adoring a Lama because he is attractive or is dressed nicely. Such superficial ways of seeing a spiritual saint and sage are truly very strange and lead to improper behaviour.
