The Missa Solemnis of Ludwig van Beethoven in D major, opus 123. The Missa Solemnis of Beethoven, in D major (his second mass) is a monumental work, not only in its length, nearly 80 minutes, but above all by its content, absolutely stupefying. With the Mass in B minor of J. S. Bach, it is one of the two summits of all sacred music. Note the difference between the two, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis does not have one air for soloists: it is essentially a choral work, with active participation of the soloists  . A short page of orchestra introduces the work then the choir sings the Kyrie Eleison, with short interventions of the soloists. 2 – Andante assai ben marcato.

Beethoven: Missa Solemnis. Ludwig van Beethoven. For those who are interested and feel up to the challenge, I say that the effort is well worth it, especially with Leonard Bernstein at the wheel of the outstanding New York Philharmonic Orchestra with the Westminster Choir and soloists. Here, Bernstein brings to the fore all the triumph, beauty, faith, despair and hope contained in the "mass". In addition to Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis", this set also includes Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy" and Haydn's "Theresa Mass". While the "Choral Fantasy" which features a choir, soloists, as well as, the outstanding Rudolf Serkin on piano; is a delightful precursor to the choral finale of, here again, Beethoven's 9th Symphony; Haydn's "Theresa Mass" is a joyful tour-de-force which exemplifies the ideal that the mass is to be "celebrated", as in "celebration of the mass".

Philippe Herreweghe's 2011 recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in D major receives high marks, not only for the elegant period treatment, but also for the profound conviction of the performance. Far from an exercise in historical re-creation, Herreweghe's Missa Solemnis has the ring of expressive truth, and the musicians' commitment makes this a worthy CD for any Beethoven collection.
