Summer of '42 is a 1971 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film based on the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher (b. 1928). It tells the story of how Raucher, in his early teens on his 1942 summer vacation on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod), embarks on a one-sided romance with a young woman, Dorothy, whose husband has gone off to fight in World War II.
released this Summer of '42 soundtrack album, and it peaked at number 52 during 32 weeks on the Billboard chart. There's only one problem: the disc contains very little music actually heard in the film. Now, the entire "original motion picture soundtrack" concept has always had problems as a real entity, if not as a marketing proposition. Film scores tend to consist of short musical figures necessary to underline the differing moods in different scenes, while a purely auditory experience practically requires something more complete. Anyone attending Summer of '42 and then putting this album on the stereo is in for a rude awakening. True, the familiar theme leads things off, and it returns at the start of side two of the LP. But otherwise, the listener is bound to be baffled.
During his summer vacation on Nantucket Island in 1942, a youth eagerly awaiting his first sexual encounter finds himself developing an innocent love for a young woman awaiting news on her soldier husband's fate in WWII. Silent as a painting, the movie shows us day-dreamer Hermie and his friends Oscy and Benjie spending the summer of '42 on an US island with their parents - rather unaffected by WWII. While Oscy's main worries are the when and how of getting laid, Hermie honestly falls in love with the older Dorothy, who's married to an army pilot.
Summer of '42 has long been considered a classic among coming-of-age stories. Filmed in 1971 as a low-budget pot boiler, the story was later turned into a best selling book in a short three weeks of writing by the original screen writer, Herman Raucher. The movie was the 6th highest grossing film of 1971 and one of the most successful films in history. She ended her 1972 letter to him with this, "The ghosts of that night 30 years ago are better left undisturbed. The real song that played on her record player that night, if you want to recreate the mood, was 'That Old Feeling. The final line from that song foretold the future, "There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start, 'Cause that old feeling is still in my heart. She could not start something new yet, because her husband was still in her heart. To her it was a drunken episode, I sense; to him, the world.

The summer knows, the summer's wise She sees the doubts within your eyes And so she takes her summertime. Tells the moon to wait and the sun to linger Twists the world 'round her summer finger Lets you see the wonder of it all. And if you've learned your lesson well There's little more for her to tell One last caress, it's time to dress, for fall.
