For those whose exposure to Soft Cell has been limited to the glorious and inescapable "Tainted Love," the duo's 1984 swan song This Last Night in Sodom should feature a warning sticker. Singer Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball don't attempt to recapture the Top 40 magic of that hit here. Instead, Almond completes his transformation into an electro-pop Scott Walker, operatically singing self-conscious and jaded songs like "Mr. Self-Destruct," "Little Rough Rhinestone," and "Meet Murder My Angel," while Ball's keyboards explore an icy,.

Soft Cell disbanded in 1984 just before the release of their fourth album, This Last Night in Sodom, but the duo briefly reunited in 2001. Almond's first proper solo album was Vermin in Ermine, released in 1984. Produced by Mike Hedges, it featured musicians from the Mambas outfit, Annie Hogan, Martin McCarrick and Billy McGee. This ensemble, known as The Willing Sinners, worked alongside Almond for the subsequent albums Stories of Johnny (1985) from which the title track became a minor hit, and Mother Fist and Her Five Daughters (1987), also produced by Mike Hedges. In 2001, Soft Cell reunited briefly and released their first new album in 18 years, Cruelty Without Beauty

Certainly sounds to me like 'Down In The Subway', and 'Mr. Self Destruct' are in mono.

At the time of writing, this release has this note on Discogs:"Despite mentioned as "Mono/Stereo" on sleeve, it's actually recorded in Stereo only."I'm not convinced. "Mr Self Destruct", "L’Esqualita", "Down in the subway", and "Surrender to a stranger" all sound mono to me, and I read some years ago that Ball and Almond wanted "Down in the subway" to be in mono to give it more of a period Northern Soul sound. Most of the other tracks on the album are in very narrow stereo, usually with nearly all instruments centred and one or two pushed to left or right. The background monologue on "Slave to this" is a rare example of heavier use of stereo (or as it's spelled on the sleeve, "sterio") here.As for the album in general, it's a superb piece of commercial suicide, right down to the migraine-inducing handwritten sleeve. Excellent.

It's not perfect, but it's the Soft Cell album I put on most regularly. Dark, unhinged, quite truly falling apart, but I love it!
