Pleasure Leftists are defined by they are not. The Cleveland quartet isn’t punk or hardcore or goth or pop or punk-rock. Rather, it manages to mix and match all these styles, pair them with an iconoclastic attitude and come up with its own sound. The band’s latest album The Gate – which it will debut when it performs at Mahall’s on Saturday – is a collection of songs, yes, but also the personalities of its members. The 10-song disc finds common ground between gloom and beauty, between a jagged guitar, a melodic bass and hypnotic drums. It provides an open-ended musical backdrop for Morris’ husky, tense voice and abstract lyrics. It’s the work of four different people and different tastes and ideas, says Morris.
