Imagination Relaxation Reminiscing Sunday Afternoon. Don Byas, Bud Powell. A Tribute to Cannonball.

The title is a tribute to altoist Cannonball Adderley, who produced this session and another, a trio session dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk. Powell blisters on this set, no doubt stimulated by the present of co-leader and fellow expatriate Don Byas, whose muscular tenor sax matched the pianist in musical brilliance. It didn’t hurt either that the rhythm section was France’s premiere bassist, Pierre Michelot, and the first great bop drummer (and another expatriate), Kenny Clarke, who hadn’t lost a bit of his speed, subtlety or originality on both sticks and brushes. I have had this album on vinyl and was heartbroken when every went digital. Truly a pearl in the ear of all jazz buffs.
