But even then the LP was a small miracle of musical understatement, released at a time when Progressive Rock was nearing its apex of decadent overkill (Pink Floyd's bloated Wall was erected that same year).

Florian" probably has the strongest classical influence of any Orme (or Le Orme) disc. The change here was to pull the proverbial plug and to release an acoustic album. Toni Pagliuca's often Keith Emerson inspired keyboard work is replaced with beautiful piano passages, a harpsichord, and even a harmonium. Michi Dei Rossi adds mallet instruments to the mix. Orme also added a violinist and acoustic guitar player in Germano Serafin. A much underrated and truly brilliant album.

Le Orme didn't go down that road. Instead, after releasing two albums in 1977, the band took a breather in 1978 and came back in 1979 with an all-acoustic record, Florian. Granted, it is a weaker effort, and most listeners will find it lacks ambition and grandeur. And yet, what a splendid endeavor for a band that was once known as an organ-led powerhouse trio. Picking up on the increased presence of acoustic guitars (and increased importance of the Italian songwriting tradition) on 1977's Storia o Leggenda, Florian offers a blend of neo-classical compositions and pastoral songs.

Le Orme (Italian: "The Footprints") is an Italian progressive rock band formed in 1966 in Marghera, a frazione of Venice. The band was one of the major groups of the Italian progressive rock scene in the 1970s. They are one of few Italian rock bands to have success outside their own country, having played concerts across North America and Europe, and releasing an album in English at the height of their success.

One of the features that make certain rock truly 'progressive' is the contamination with classical and symphonic music. Many others tried to experiment, with varying success, but without fully giving up their identity; Le Orme began to contaminate their music since "Collage" (1971), but never before a change had been more drastic than that of "Florian".The album, released in 1979, which shows a picture of the band in front of the homonymous Café in San Marco in Venice on the inner gatefold cover, is completely free of any of the modern sounds of the previous band's LP to look towards past and tradition. We could call it 'unplugged', close to the folk and sometimes ethno/world music (listen to the song "Il mago", for example) genres, entirely recorded with acoustic instruments (vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, violin, mandola, bouzouki) and very distant from any late '70s trends.

By 1979 other well-known Italian progressive rock bands had abandoned their classically inspired, keyboard driven sound in favor of pop. New Trolls were trying to be the Italian version of The Bee Gees. PFM had become a pop-rock band after a brief flirtation with jazz. Not so for Orme, who had dropped "Le" (The) from their name. They decided to go in precisely the opposite direction. "Florian" probably has the strongest classical influence of any Orme (or Le Orme) disc. The change here was to pull the proverbial plug and to release an acoustic album. Instead of an electric bass guitar Aldo Tagliapietra plays cello and classical guitar. The result is, as you'd expect, a softer sound which perfectly suits Aldo Tagliapietra's vocal style. There is also a bit of a folk-rock sound in places. Fans who were expecting a forceful, electric record were undoubtedly disappointed by "Florian". Today, though, this album stands the test of time better than any other (Le) Orme release. Yes, "Uomo Di Pezza" amd "Felona E Serona" were great albums but "Florian", at least to my ears, represented a new musical and creative peak for the band. I like Orme a lot and this has become my favorite of theirs. A much underrated and truly brilliant album. Highly recommended. -Caitlyn Martin
