Producing, arranging and performing this album is for McKay the natural outcome of years of enraptured listening to Ms. Day's music. She was - and still is - ahead of her time". Nellie handpicked these songs from over 600 recordings. A rainy day with Nellie McKay is my idea of heaven. Normal as Blueberry Pie" is a sultry and fun record that would have fit in perfectly with the '50s, yet is a welcome and gorgeous modern sunbeam in the otherwise murky fog of autotuned garbage that's poured into our ears. On one hand, it's a shame to not enjoy the original songwriting skills of McKay as she's one of the best young scribes out there, but in her hands, the work of Doris Day is simply sublime
Released by Verve Records, it is McKay's first cover album, composed of songs previously recorded by American singer and actress Doris Day, except the track "If I Ever Had a Dream", which is an original song written by McKay in tribute to Da. .Nellie McKay release Normal As Blueberry Pie-A Tribute To Doris Day album". Doris Day (born Doris Mary Kappelhoff; April 3, 1922 – May 13, 2019) was an American actress, singer, and animal welfare activist. She began her career as a big band singer in 1939, achieving commercial success in 1945 with two No. 1 recordings, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" with Les Brown & His Band of Renown. During the war troops referred to her as "the American V-2" She left Brown to embark on a solo career and recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967. It serves as McKay's first collection of original songs since 2007's Obligatory Villagers, and the follow-up to her previous album, Normal as Blueberry Pie - A Tribute to Doris Day (2009). I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy. "A Wonderful Guy" is a show tune from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific.
The selection choices shy away from Day's hits; only "Sentimental Journey" appears from a list of Doris Day's biggest, while "Secret Love," "Day by Day," "Come to Baby, Do," and "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" are left behind.

In one way or another, Nellie McKay has spent a decent chunk of her fruitful career paying tribute to Doris Day. Openly embracing the jazz and vocal standards of the Tin Pan Alley era, McKay, like Day, projects unaltered exuberance, shameless optimism, and brisk and effortless confidence. McKay is certainly more of an eccentric, but both singers carved out careers with a sense of control and precociousness that belied their ages. For the most part though, McKay skips the hits, choosing instead lesser-known album and film tracks closely associated with Day along with selections from the Great American Songbook that Day tackled. Irony-free, McKay channels Day's elegance and liveliness on not only swing, Dixieland, and showtunes, but also makes detours into bossa nova and western-inspired songs.
Listening to Normal As Blueberry Pie, one might say Nellie McKay is not a traditional jazz singer, whatever that is. In the case of this "Tribute to Doris Day," she's just good and also a lot of fun. Musically, McKay's voice can be feathery at times and, like Day, she has perfect pitch and an optimistic delivery that sounds effortless. I love jazz because it speaks to my soul and never disappoints. The complexity and the improv mean that I never hear the same cut on an album or live performance of a piece the same way twice and it works my mind, body and soul.
My Weekly Reader is Nellie McKay's sixth album, and second cover album, following her Doris Day tribute album "Normal as Blueberry Pi. The record consists entirely of covers of hits from the 1960s, including songs by Frank Zappa, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and Moby Grape. McKay enlisted Dweezil Zappa, Frank Zappa's son, to play guitar on. her cover of his father's "Hungry Freaks, Daddy;" she also enlisted Bela Fleck to play banjo.
