Oil On Canvas is a live album by the English band Japan, released in June 1983, six months after the band had broken up. It became their highest charting album in the UK, peaking at number 5. The live tracks on the double-album were taken from the band's performances at the Hammersmith Odeon in November 1982, during their final live concert tour. With guitarist Rob Dean having left the band in 1981, Japanese session musician Masami Tsuchiya was added to the line-up on guitar and additional keyboards

Originally recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London in November 1982, this double LP was released as a farewell gesture. It’s mostly comprised of tracks from their later albums Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum, with one entry from 1979’s Quiet Life, but it also contains three never-before-heard instrumentals, providing short interludes among the live takes.

This band who was effectively robbed of success by Duran Duran, Started as a semi punk mostly New Romantic rock band transformed into one of the great unknown bands of the 1980's.

The final Japan release was sold and marketed as a live album, though actually it's a bit of a catchall - it is indeed mostly from concerts, but also includes a variety of studio instrumentals and a re-recorded version of "Nightporter" mixed in to sound like it's part of the show. The various re-releases of the albums over the years confused matters further, with re-sequencings, the excision of cuts, and more adding to general confusion about the release (not to mention the fact that some reissues completely omitted where the shows were recorded anyway!).
