Twenty years after Basement Jaxx's first release, the dance veterans' new album is a strange one, in the sense that it's not really strange at all. Junto is fundamentally sound, never content to stay in one place for too long but not all that scattershot when it comes to going off the experimental deep end. Featured Tracks: Play Track. But let's face it-Basement Jaxx is not a group that's at their best when they just bear down and focus on the fundamentals. Even when Junto showcases them at their best-that'd be the knockout "Unicorn," which is both the liveliest single on the record and their most shameless vintage house throwback since "Do Your Thing"-the sense of adventure is missing
Fortunately, Basement Jaxx's return to their roots never feels too self-conscious, even on "Never Say Never," a piece of piano house with the refrain "the music brings me right back
Basement Jaxx really outdid themselves with the single offerings on Junto. Taking full notice of the temperature of the scene around them, there's something here for everybody. Album opener "Power To The People" is a radio-friendly dance-pop masterwork, complete with steel drum, full chorus, and marimba! "Unicorn" gives us an excellent challenger to the deep house reign of Disclosure with a piece of colorful 90s magic. The track almost feels like a continuation of one-off Jaxx single "Back 2 The Wild" from last year
