Few composers have been as consistently preoccupied with their national origins as Jón Leifs, who only found his calling as a composer when he encountered a collection of Icelandic folk music. From the very beginning, Iceland, its music and myths, its landscape and climate furnished him with the material for almost all of his compositions. And from the very beginning Leifs knew that he wanted to create a great oratorio using texts from the Edda, Iceland's national treasure. He started work on the libretto in 1930, and soon decided that the theme of the first section would be The Creation.

The Iceland Symphony announced today the appointment of Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director beginning with the 2020/21 season. Before her inaugural season, Ollikainen takes to the stage in March 2020 for the orchestra's 70th anniversary concert. Broadcasts from concerts. Listen live or stream later. Schola Cantorum Reykjavík, Iceland Symphony Orchestr & Hermann Bäumer – Leifs: Edda, Pt. 2, Op. 42 The Lives of the Gods (2019).

The music of Jón Leifs is often inspired by Iceland’s powerful nature and literary heritage. From early on he was profoundly influenced by the medieval tradition of Icelandic literature, preserved in a handful of manuscripts, including the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. Leifs’ magnum opus is the Edda oratorio, a massive (although incomplete) work in three large parts which occupied him on and off for most of his composing career – from around 1930 to his death in 1968.
