Description

The father of primal scream therapy, Dr. Janov maintained, not without controversy, that it could cure an array of ills, from alcoholism to asthma. Along the way he earned a P. in psychology from what is now Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif. Then one day in the late 1960s, as he recounted in The Primal Scream, came the experience that forever transformed his professional life: A patient told him about a performance artist he had seen in London, who took the stage wearing a diaper and proceeded to drink milk from a bottle; cry, Mommy! Daddy! ; and, in cathartic culmination, retch. The Janov Primal Center currently treats about 40 patients annually. After writing The Primal Scream, Dr. Janov asked his publisher to send a copy to Mr. Lennon. He went on to treat Mr. Lennon and Ms. Ono, first in England and later in California.

He gained notability as the creator of primal therapy, a treatment for mental illness that involves repeatedly descending into, feeling, and experiencing long-repressed childhood pain. Janov first directed a psychotherapy institute called the Primal Institute on Santa Monica Blvd. and from 1980 the Janov Primal Center on Ashland Ave. in Santa Monica, California.

Arthur Janov's primal therapy became a cultural phenomenon in the 60s and 70s, but today most experts say that the technique is unhelpful and can even be harmful to some patients. This is primal therapy, and it's quite something to behold. Founder Dr. Arthur Janov once described his psychotherapy method as "the most important discovery of the 20th century," but the vast majority of people in the mental health community see it as pseudoscience or even a kind of scam. That hasn't stopped Janov and his supporters from touting it as a mental health treatment that's simpler and more effective than everything else out there. Primal therapy largely rejects the uncertainty of conventional psychotherapy.
