Pete Shelley (born Peter Campbell McNeish; 17 April 1955 – 6 December 2018) was an English singer, songwriter and guitarist. He formed early punk band Buzzcocks with Howard Devoto in 1976, and was the lead singer and guitarist from 1977 when Devoto left, releasing "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" in 1978. The band broke up in 1981, reforming in 1989.
Shelley, who has died of a heart attack aged 63, proved to be a songwriter of wit and subtlety, able to probe the angst and confusion of adolescent love and lust with shrewd insight. While the music of many of the punk bands remains firmly of its time, Buzzcocks’ best songs still sound fresh and inventive, mixing dense guitar patterns with infectious melodies. Their influence can be heard on bands from Primal Scream and the Jesus and Mary Chain to R E M and Nirvana. Shelley borrowed the title from a line in the musical Guys and Dolls.

Pete Shelley, who supercharged pop melodies with punk energy as the leader of the British band Buzzcocks, died on Thursday at his home in Talinn, Estonia. He was 63. His label, Domino Records, said the cause was a heart attack. Mr. Shelley had moved to Estonia, the home country of his wife, Greta, an artist, in 2012. Shelley’s breakneck guitar strumming propelled songs that often proclaimed lovelorn vulnerability alongside acute self-consciousness. I’m in distress, I need a caress, he sang on one of the first Buzzcocks singles, What Do I Get?.

Pete Shelley’s solo career came completely out the blue and faded just as fast. It’s now seen as little more than a subplot in the Buzzcocks story, but Shelley’s two solo albums were revealing, entertaining and in some ways pioneering, embracing gay pride, computer technology and electropop with real enthusiasm. Shelley realised he could apply his trademark yelp, mischievous lyrics and love of hooks to a different canvas.

Saved (Acoustic) Over the last few years I have become involved in the secular movement. I feel quite impassioned by the fact that some laws are in place solely to appease the religious lobby. eg: Marriage Inequality, Euthanasia, Abortion) I feel as though many ethical discussions that our community needs to have are held back because of irrational and unscientific ideas. I have written this album firstly as an expression of my honest response to these issues. Also, I hope to bring this essential and interesting discussion into the public discourse. This is a topic which is not so readily delved into. I don’t claim to have all the answers or that my world view is without flaws.
