Description

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album. Slowcore, postrock, grunge, sadcore, whatever you want to call it - this is a phenomenal album. Easily as good as anything Low, Slint, Bitch Magnet, et al ever produced. Shame they split up. Would love to know which other bands the members went on to be in. Doug Scharin i know was in Rex, HIM, Directions in Music, and June of 44 - but the others? As for the album, the tone isn't cold or unemotional, but simply gripped by a deep black mood, where everything seems on the verge of suddenly going wrong or collapsing. There's a cryptic warmth in the slow tempos and feedback produced from the deliberate strumming and chords from John Engle and Chris Brokaw's guitars.

Codeine was an American indie rock band formed in 1989 in New York City and later based in Chicago. The band broke up in 1994 shortly after the release of The White Birch, but reunited to play a handful of shows in 2012.

Upon first listen it’s difficult to sit through just because the music is so bleak, gloomy, and absent of any optimism. While other acts tagged as sadcore such as Low, Arab Strap, and Red House Painters are more or less led by one songwriter, Codeine have a more rock oriented sound involving every member of the band. When listening to Codeine there isn’t anything that really impresses me musically, yet the album has a fairly powerful feel.

Chris Brokaw (Drummer on Frigid Stars) was in Come. Also excellent.
