But, best of all, it has two extended pieces for contralto and orchestra that give prominence to a new, to me, and evidently rather young contralto, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, who has me thinking of that other Canadian contralto, Maureen Forrester, who also sang baroque music exquisitely in her day. First is a brief Sinfonia in G for Strings (RV. 149) by Vivaldi acting as an overture leading us into the seven-movement 'Salva Regina' of Domenico Scarlatti.

Domenico Scarlatti is best known for his huge number (at least 550) of solo harpsichord sonatas. But Scarlatti's choral works are far less well-known. Written for only soprano, alto and continuo the Salve Regina is sparer and more concentrated. If a date were hazarded, it would surely be for Scarlatti's earliest period, in Naples. It's a reflective, almost "moody" piece; less dark than downbeat, more consciously detached that laden with imprecations.
