The 10 track album kicks off in quite spectacular fashion with what is probably Machine Head’s heaviest track to date, Imperium which builds gently with a nice clean chord and then a layer of clean guitar on top of that before exploding with drums to let you know within 60 seconds of the first track that this is not going to be . nu-metal. Imperium is followed by more powerful drumming and catchy rhythm on Bite the Bullet and then by the emotionally charged and extremely angry Left Unfinished, with furious lyrics focused on bad parenting

You get 2003's Through The Ashes Of Empires. An example of the anger that Machine Head put into their music is found straight away in the first track, Imperium. It starts with a quiet and clean chord slide, slowly building up the tension with a layer of clean guitar on top, before exploding into some pounding drums, and then eventually, the verse. Packing in more 'f s' than a Dutch brothel, this song is a prime example of the hatred and anger Machine Head portrays. It also has some of the best guitar and drum work that Machine Head have ever produced, and in my opinion, is indeed one of the best songs on the album

This means that 'Through the Ashes of Empires' is the "comeback" album, as in the album that changed the style back to the groove/heavy/thrash weight of the first two MH full-lengths. Now, for pure quality, I don't think MH have ever quite topped their debut (not if we're talking about consistent quality anyway), though they have had parts of albums or specific songs that rise above that level, especially on 'The Blackening'. The disappointing thing when listening to 'Through the Ashes of Empires' is that the quality is inconsistent. It’s a little more power/thrash and melodic than what you got with Vio-Lence’s first two albums, but it definitely leaves the groove field completely for greener pastures.
