Tone Dogs were formed in 1987 as a collaboration between bass players Fred Chalenor, Amy Denio and recording engineer Drew Canulette. Denio & Chalenor thought a 2-bass band would be great, and began writing music together. Soon, they roped in other great musicians & friends on the recording - Matt Cameron of Soundgarden, Fred Frith and Hans Reichel from the European improvising scene, and others.

Tone Dogs was an avant-prog group founded in 1987 by bassist Fred Chalenor and Amy Denio, who comprised the nucleus of the band. Drummer Matt Cameron, known for his work in the alternative rock group Soundgarden, was recruited to perform on the band's 1990 debut album Ankety Low Day. The band has also performed with Fred Frith of Henry Cow and Hans Reichel.
