Ella is a 1969 studio album by the American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald and the first of two albums she recorded for the Warner Bros. This album continues the theme set on Fitzgerald's previous album, consisting in the main part of cover versions of popular songs from the late 1960s. The production of this recording was in the hands of Richard Perry, who had joined the Reprise label in 1967. Perry later went on the produce albums by Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross
Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.

She began singing with the Chick Webb Orchestra and had several hits with them, including 'Love and Kisses' and novelty song 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket'; when Webb died in 1939 Ella became the orchestra's band leader. She left to go solo in 1942 and as the swing era faded she adopted her style to incorporate spontaneous scat singing, vocally imitating the orchestra's horn section. Her 1950 album 'Ella Sings Gershwin' was also influential and, recording for Verve through the '50s and '60s, she released a series of albums of music by different writers that set the template for the Great American Songbook and established her as one of the greatest singers of the 20th century.

She recorded copiously both with Webb and under her own name with members of his band. She took over running the orchestra when he died of TB in 1939, but broke up the band in the early 1940s to focus on a solo career. She recorded some fine discs for Milt Gabler, her producer at Decca, but then she moved to the Verve label, set up by Norman Granz, who also directed the Jazz At The Philharmonic concerts on which she became a firm and popular fixture
