Recorded in stereo in 1965 in New York by The American Brass Quintet, Music for Brass Quintet features two trumpets, tenor and bass trombones, and French horn performing seven chamber music compositions dating from the mid-15th to the mid-20th century. This inaugural recording by the Quintet was followed in 1967 by Music of the Renaissance and Baroque, also on Folkways. The Quintet celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2010. The liner notes include thumbnail biographies of the five instrumentalists and brief descriptions of each of the seven chamber music pieces.
The brass quintet as we know it is a modern constellation, but ensembles of wind instruments, involving shawms and sackbuts, were a staple before the Renaissance had even begun. The music that such groups played would have varied from the ceremonial to more lightweight material, such as popular dances and settings of chansons. Arrangements of music of this kind still form an important part of the repertoire of most brass ensembles, including Stockholm Chamber Brass.
There are more than 100 titles subdivided into Just Brass (mainstream), Junior Just Brass, Just Brass Lollipops and Giant Just Brass. This set of five Renaissance Dances has been arranged from Tylman Susato's original compositions by John Iveson. Supplied as score and parts together, for 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba.
