Allen Toussaint sings just once on his final album, American Tunes, but it’s a moment worth savoring. The song is Paul Simon’s American Tune, a secular hymn of perseverance, and he starts out solemn, backed only by an acoustic guitar. He waits a full two minutes before tolling a chord at the piano, as punctuation for the first line of the bridge: And I dreamed I was dying. He plays it on the offbeat, naturally

American Tunes features solo piano recordings made at Touissant’s home studio as well as others made with guests like Jay Bellerose, Bill Frisell, Rhiannon Giddens, and Van Dyke Parks. He’s in fine form, too, lending his singular style to songs by Professor Longhair, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon, and beautiful originals like Southern Nights. American Tunes is a posthumous album from Allen Toussaint, who, though he had a six decade-long musical career, began his work as a regular touring live performer began in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina claimed most of his possessions and his recording studio in its destructive wake. Toussaint’s responsible for infusing the syncopated pianos of ragtime jazz and boom-bap style swing into New Orleans funk and rock, but his just-released collection does not necessarily reflect that level of innovation.

I saw Michael Fremer's review of this and then saw the people who guest on the record, plus the low prices, and bought it immediately (along with The Bright Mississippi). I am beyond pleased with everything about the record. Gorgeous and imaginative interpretations, excellent recording, and Bob Ludwig mastered. Very nice liner notes as well. The records are very high quality - very quiet background and very few if any imperfections. I would venture to say that a pressing of this caliber and attention to detail would typically sell for $40, not $20.
