The Belcea Quartet is well-known for its dynamic and compelling interpretations.

In this 2008 EMI Classics release, the Belcea Quartet presents Béla Bartók's six string quartets with phenomenal accuracy and assured style, though this British-based ensemble falls short in expression and fails to plumb the depths of these landmarks of twentieth century chamber music.

The Belcea Quartet is a string quartet, formed in 1994, under the leadership of violinist Corina Belcea. The quartet was formed while its members were studying at the Royal College of Music in London. Whilst there, they were coached by the Chilingirian Quartet. They subsequently studied with the Alban Berg Quartet at Cologne. The quartet was one of the first groups to participate in the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, from 1999 to 2001

For any quartet they represent a huge challenge, musically and technically. But for all one's admiration for much of what they do - technically, these performances are impeccable, without a trace of insecurity - the feeling persists that their interpretation of the cycle as a whole is still in one sense a work-in-progress, and that in 10 years' time or so, if this superb group remains more or less intact, they might return

The Belcea Quartet are truly excellent in the six Bartok String Quartets. Precise, but not too much so (as with the Emersons, whose DG recording is, alas, over-rated in my opinion), but with a hefty dose of local flavour. Having said that, there are many superlative sets of these works, works which repay repeated hearings as well as anything, and are on a level with the Beethoven quartets. Bartok: String Quartets 1-6 is a 2008 EMI Records Ltd. recording starring the Belcea Quartet. Having listened to Emerson String Quartets recording prior to this one, I must say that the former is better. The playing is good but the passion is lacking. The playing style is a bit lackadascial and could use some more passion for the music.
