It is a member institution of the State University System of Florida. Founded in 1956, USF is the fourth-largest public university in the state of Florida, with an enrollment of 50,755 as of the 2018–2019 academic year. The USF system has three institutions: USF Tampa, USF St. Petersburg and USF Sarasota-Manatee

The University of California Jazz Ensembles, also known as the UC Jazz Ensembles, UC Jazz, or UCJE, is the student jazz organization founded in 1967 on the University of California, Berkeley, campus. Founded in 1967, it comprises one or more big bands, numerous jazz combos, a vocal jazz ensemble, an alumni big band, and instructional classes. With a mission statement to foster a community for the performance, study, and promotion of jazz at .

There are four jazz ensembles (2 Big Bands, 2 Combos) at SDSU under the direction of Dr. Yi Chen, and all are open by audition to students from any major on campus. Presenting the best in both traditional and contemporary jazz literature, the jazz ensembles perform a Fall Concert in November and a Spring Concert in April. Student ensembles also perform locally at venues throughout the year. SDSU also offers courses in jazz improvisation, jazz pedagogy, and jazz appreciation. In 2012, SDSU Jazz Ensemble I performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland

Distinguished University Professor of Jazz Studies, Director of the USF Center for Jazz Composition, and Director of the USF Jazz Ensemble for 22 years, established and developed USF's widely acclaimed Jazz Program, Jazz Masterworks Series, International Jazz Composer's Symposium, the USF Suncoast Jazz Festival, and the USF Jazz Residency Series. With over 50 published compositions, Owen serves as the International Association for Jazz Education President, has served as the IAJE National Composition Chairman, Florida chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences governor, and is a member of the College Music Society, American Music Society, ASCAP, and ISME.

The Hall High School Jazz Ensemble, which hails from West Hartford, Connecticut, didn’t win this year’s Essentially Ellington high–school Jazz band competition at Carnegie Hall - but director Haig Shahverdian’s wunderkinds placed second behind New York City’s LaGuardia High among 168 entrants (20 finalists were invited to New York), which certainly speaks well for the program (as. does its third–place finish in ’97).
