Downfall of Gaia are a fairly typical example of a movement that has been developing over the last decade or so in the extreme music underground in Europe. A fairly large number of bands have been combining hardcore usually of the crust variety with metal and post-rock. Creating something that can not be said to be purely one genre but as far as I have heard always whole, absolutely not like a haphazard mix of genres. Maybe eventually this will get their own genre name. Personally I am a big fan of this genre and have been getting heavily into it over the last couple years  . This album follows on the previous release by increasing the metal elements. The drumming becomes more black metal in style. The riffs themselves are more metallic. However this is still mostly a neocrust record.

They've just swapped places. Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes relies far more heavily on Isis-inspired post-metal and mournful, cathartic black metal for inspiration, though shades of their grimy past and appreciation for Amebix's depressive, wintery moments are on display. Instrumental opener "" drones and heaves its way into the post-black metal spiral of "Drowning By Wing Beats", a mellow, mid-paced number that tempers its moodiness with a smattering of hoarse roars and athletic drumming.
