Album · 2008 · 12 Songs. Mount Hope Pygmy Lush.
Mount Hope’ sees Pygmy Lush at their most peaceful. Gone are the outbursts of screams and palm muted power chords. As the band has essentially been touring as a loud and soft entity, one assumes their next record will be entirely loud. While, I am excited it is kind of disappointing to think that the group will not revisit the beautiful sounds they did in making ‘Mount Hope’. Perhaps that adds to the intimate impact of ‘Mount Hope’ as it does feel like something that could’ve just been cast into any of the member’s closets. If one thing can be said about ‘Mount Hope’ it is certainly the most.
Maybe the gaggle of softer songs on Bitter was a harbinger, but Mount Hope is more in tune with intimately tranquil, backwoods, fingerpicked folk-pop in the Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, and even Harvest/Harvest Moon Neil Young ("Frozen Man, Dreams Are Class") school, with an odd ambient sheen in the back of some tracks.
Pygmy Lush (sometimes spelled as one word) is a band from Sterling, Virginia formed by ex-Pg. 99 members Mike and Chris Taylor and Johnny Ward. Other members include Mike Widman and Eric Kane, and previous associated acts include Malady, Mannequin, and Hissing Choir, amongst many others. In June 2008, they released their second album, Mount Hope, which was recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge, who has contributed to most of their releases) of Godcity Studio and released on Lovitt Records. This album consisted entirely of quieter, folk style songs. leav hardcore behind" to describe the stylistic evolution of the band.
Pygmy Lush, whose members have cut their teeth in some of Northern Virginia's most influential hardcore bands of the last decade including P. 9, Majority Rule, Malady, City of Caterpillar and Crestfallen, return with their much anticipated second full-length, Mount Hope. Pygmy Lush formed in the spring of 2005 on the very day two of their previous bands, Malady and Mannequin broke up. They started out by carrying on much of the same ferocity of their previous endeavors but a massive change was afoot. Somewhere in their early practices they had started four-tracking several quieter songs.
