Samuel Smiles (frequently known as Tim Bowness/Samuel Smiles, the name to which all of their albums were attributed) were an intermittently active English ambient-folk band. Their best known line-up featured singer Tim Bowness (of the band No-Man). A live album, The Way We Used To Live, followed the next year (and was later reissued in an expanded version on Burning Shed as Live Archive Two). Samuel Smiles performed regularly throughout 1999 and 2000, included support slots with Porcupine Tree, Marillion and Roy Harper. However, the band was prone to regular internal tensions (primarily between Bearpark and Chilvers) and ground to a halt in the early 2000s, although all of the members retained their personal and professional friendships

The Ambient Folk band Tim Bowness/Samuel Smiles performed and recorded between 1991 and 2001. Releasing one studio album (World Of Bright Futures), the band regularly performed as a trio (Tim Bowness, Peter Chilvers, Mike Bearpark), but were occasionally joined by Myke Clifford (sax/flute) and Marianne De Chastellaine (cello). Support slots included performances with Marillion and Porcupine Tree.

Notes

Live Archive Volume Two comprises The Way We Used To Live plus six extra tracks.

A direct to CD recording of a performance from December 2nd 1999, this expanded edition of the highly regarded album by the less than smiley Smiles features a fascinating excerpt of the No-Man classic, Days In The Trees, and a glorious, previously unreleased, rendition of Sorry Looking Soldier.

The Way We Used To Live is a direct to CD recording of a performance by Tim Bowness and Samuel Smiles at the Cambridge Folk Club on the evening of December 3rd, 1999. What you get is what actually happened, with, as the gatefold sleeves of all 1970's live doubles will untruthfully tell you, 'no overdubs'.
In our case, for once we're not lying. Maybe it was hubris, maybe it was a barely suppressed admiration for Neil Diamond's 'Love At The Greek' and 'Kiss Alive II', but we felt the time was right for another, less celebrated entry into the rogues gallery of the live album.
After hearing it back for the first time, we hastily scrawled into our respective notebooks, 'some magic, some fluffs'.
Hopefully that's enough.
