Jackdaw with Crowbar is an English multi-media indie band from Leamington Spa. The band was formed in 1985, but consolidated in 1987, when signed to Ron Johnson Records, until it went bust. Jackdaw with Crowbar's original line-up was Timothy Ellis, Fergus Durrant, Dave Tibbats and Dan Morrison, with Adam Sindall, Steve Law and Fran Juckes making Super 8mm films which were always present in their live performances.

In 1985 Jackdaw with Crowbar pioneered a technique of projecting several layers of 8mm film onto live musicians. The set varied from post punk to dub to eastern jazz with influences like Captain Beefheart, Lee Perry, The Residents and Wire. The films would sometimes lead the music or visa versa often mocking the politics of the day and distorting reality whilst the music always ahead of the times treading unexplored territories with homemade instruments and re purposed analogue technology.

Jackdaw with Crowbar's first 12" EP features 3 driving punk songs and a dub exploration. The punk songs vaguely resemble Gang of Four-influenced contemporaries like Bogshed, but with less conventional structures or lyrical flow. While the dub workout "Fourth World" is less evolved in execution than the group's later efforts in this style on their album Hot Air, it illustrates that the group's far-reaching creative vision dates to their inception. The rock songs sound lo-fi and midrange-y, but "Fourth World" includes much richer use of high frequencies.
