The Frank and Walters are one of the most recognizable alternative rock bands hailing from Cork, Ireland in the past 2 decades. The band: Paul Linehan (Lead vocal & bass), Ashley Keating- (Drums) Rory Murphy (lead Guitar) and Cian Corbett (Keyboards) took the band name in honour of two eccentric Cork characters. Two decades on from the release of their very first record, and the Franks continue to defy expectations

Beauty Becomes More Than Life is only this Irish trio's third album - not much to show for a decade's striving. Yet they've persevered with the same lineup, seven years since their only . hit. That's a measure of this group's love of playing, and it continues to show in their work. Mind you, Beauty is nowhere as wonderful as 1997's golden Grand Parade. It errs in placing tracks in the number four and five slots that merely meander, temporarily derailing the LP just as it's heating up. And throughout, the drums are too loud in the mix, obscuring some of the natural beauty they showed last time
The Frank and Walters formed in 1990 in the Cork suburb of Bishopstown. The initial lineup consisted of brothers Paul (bass and vocals) and Niall Linehan (guitar), along with drummer Ashley Keating. They quickly gained a cult following in Cork and were picked up by independent Dublin label Setanta Records. Three more years passed before the release of the Beauty Becomes More Than Life in 1999, a more mature album that saw the threesome experiment with loops and samples for the first time. It was followed by Glass in 2000, before a self-titled "best-of" collection brought an end to their contract with Setanta, from whom they bought back their master recordings.
The lyrics to every song on this album are variations on the very personal and at times touching themes of not wasting love, being hurt by love and being lonely, having faith in a loved one who doesn’t believe in you and much more in the same vain. It is certainly rooted in the personal, but it would all be rather depressing were it not for Rob Kirwan’s production, which in places seems to belong to another record. But for all that this is not a bad record – it is a progression from the musical territory previously inhabited by The Frank and Walters. The last offering from this band to grace my CD player was a glorious, raw guitars effort called Fast Anthony, a track that reminded me of the old Amersham Arms gigs in New Cross, south London, at which (at the tender age of 17) I was frequently to be seen moshing to some heavy rock pub band or other.
