I Am Very Far is the sixth album by Okkervil River, released on May 10, 2011. It was produced primarily in Austin, Connecticut and Brooklyn by lead singer Will Sheff with John Congleton and Phil Palazzolo

Okkervil River were gradually improving their public profile when they became Texas rock legend Roky Erickson’s backing band. Together, they assembled the album True Love Cast Out All Evil, a brilliant comeback record that taught the group a few subtle lessons. I Am Very Far is, arguably, the band’s tightest record to date. There’s a simplicity here that turns songs such as Rider and Lay of the Last Survivor into direct hits. Will Sheff rarely overdoes his vocals and when he does allow a greater theatrical flourish, he pulls it off, . the punchy We Need a Myth.

I Am Very Far never feels like it is coming from a band in experimentation mode (negatively, that is); a band that doesn’t really know what they are doing. It is their first album since the 2008 release of The Stand Ins and their 2010 collaboration with Roky Erickson, True Love Cast Out All Evil. It was produced primarily in Austin, Connecticut and Brooklyn, New York by lead singer Will Sheff.

Okkervil River’s sixth album is an excellent, reductionist work, the sound of a band attempting to locate the visceral core of their craft by submerging every other element in noise. I Am Very Far was hastily outlined over several marathon improv sessions shortly after Sheff’s stint producing Rocky Erickson’s True Love Cast Out All Evil. The album was later fleshed out using a diverse pallet of choral instruments, but when bassoon and tympani just wouldn’t cut it, the band didn’t halt their momentum to try and figure out a solution. Instead, they tossed filing cabinets around the studio and unraveled spools of duct tape into microphones to achieve desired sounds

Handed a big budget for his latest album, the frontman for Austin indie rockers Okkervil River may have single-handedly propped up the Texas economy. On several songs, he’s deployed a 13-piece musical army consisting of two drummers, two pianists, two bassists, and seven guitarists, all playing live at the same time. It’s a welcome relief from the storm. But the real revelations on I Am Very Far occur when the furious bombast collides with the paranoid poetry and the existential dread. It’s Kafka meets Mahler at the hipster club, and it’s easily one of the musical highlights of the year.
