Hüsker Dü first gained notability as a hardcore punk band, later crossing over into alternative rock. Mould and Hart were the principal songwriters for Hüsker Dü, with Hart's higher-pitched vocals and Mould's baritone taking the lead in alternating songs. Following the release of three LPs and an EP on independent label SST Records, including the critically acclaimed Zen Arcade in 1984, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1986 to release their final two studio albums. The intense but varied Metal Circus EP/mini-album was released in 1983. Hüsker Dü's more melodic take on hardcore struck a chord with college students, and various tracks from Metal Circus, particularly Hart's "Diane," were put into rotation by dozens of campus radio stations across the . In addition, on Metal Circus the band showed more invention, skill, and melody than it did over the course of their previous full album

While several tunes ("Deadly Skies," "Lifeline") are clearly rooted in the furious pace of '80s hardcore punk, others-such as "Real World," "It's Not Funny Anymore," and especially "Diane"-feature the kind of melodies that would be further expanded with each new release. Real World" looks at punk rock's infatuation with anarchy and other slogans with skepticism.

For those that are new to Hüsker Dü, I would strongly recommend firstly, doing what I did, and starting your collection, with their seminal 3 album run of "Zen Arcade", "Flip your Wig" & "New Day Rising". Only the criminally insane would argue against picking up those albums, and it's extremely likely that it'll fuel a desire to pick up more of their work. And this is where, I believe this EP is perfectly suited
