These are very fine performances of very fine repertoire. Cellist Steven Isserlis plays with glowing warmth, great strength, and complete commitment. Pianist Peter Evans plays with restrained power, beautiful tone, and complete sympathy. Composer Bohuslav Martinu writes with tremendous facility, deep lyricism, and complete musicality. In everyway but one, if one were going to hear Martinu's Cello Sonatas, this would be the recording to get. Unfortunately, as fine as the performances on this disc are, there are finer performances on another disc with the same repertoire
Cello – Steven Isserlis. Composed By – Johannes Brahms. Engineer – Antony Howell. Executive Producer – Edward Perry. Piano – Peter Evans (5). Producer – Andrew Keener.

These cello sonatas are very exciting to listen to! However, they do not make good background music when trying to have a discussion with one's spouse or when talking on the phone. Best to listen to this music when you will not be interrupted with conversation, but definitely worth adding to the music collection. Since ever I can remember, duo sonatas with piano have always been referred to as being for cello and piano, or violin and piano, or whatever and piano. Unless I am mistaken, the practice in classical times, ending only with Brahms's clarinet sonatas dating from the end of his career, was the other way about - piano and cello etc. This usage was a survival from very early days when duos were thought of as keyboard sonatas with some obbligato second instrument.
The album included the following session artists: Cello. Composed By. Johannes Brahms.
Performers: Steven Isserlis, cello Stephen Hough, piano.
