Wel Wel
The first 90' UK single is by far the best. No rapper C dude to be found!

The Omar 7" edit here is a remarkably tightened up, deftly cut version of a much longer Moby remix, and it works very well. Since it's Omar, he's not just chopping and gluing like most major label edit butchers, he's keeping the spirit of the remix but also magically making it fit into a much more radio-friendly amount of time. I'm not sure how he does it, but it definitely serves its purpose here.

Tracks 3 and 4 were recorded in 1989, 3 years prior to the release of this promo e.p. In this era the Shamen were Colin Angus and Will Sin. Both of these tunes are covers of songs by classic psych rock artists (Jimi Hendrix and The 13th Floor Elevators respectively). Both of them are exclusive to this release, so they are very interesting documents from a time when The Shamen were in the middle of their transformation from acid rock to acid house. Maybe The Shamen didn't plan to ever release these tunes when they recorded them. As Will Sin is credited for production on Purple Haze, and Colin Angus for production on Slip Inside This House, I have the idea that these tunes could be the result of a contest between Sin and Angus on who could do the better psych rock cover. In my judgement Will Sin is the clear winner, coming up with something much more experimental and truly psychedelic (as often when he ruled the mixing desk); to Angus' credit it has to be said that his production is ahead of its time and sounds more like from 1992, though then it would have been a run-of-the-mill dance-pop tune; it also sounds less inspired than Angus' own 1989 compositions. As a sidenote, Primal Scream recorded their (superior) acid house cover of Slip Inside This House later than The Shamen, but released it earlier.

Will & I recorded PH1 on 8 track at Brian Pugsleys home studio. The 3 of us mixed it at another studio later -6 hands on the desk! There's a ruff n raw demo'd dub I Mixed on the Shamens M80 -8track when they were squatting in Royal college St in Camden done around the same time, that was never completed due to a few annoying reasons.Mr M.Mann had nothing to do with the engineering or recodring/mix.Both tunes you write of were asked for by the compilers of the tributes. The Ultimate Irony was also recorded on 8 track just prior to these & mixed at around the same time as PH1- @ the squat from 8track by me- yeah no credit on any of them- blame Tosh their manager (his girlfriend stars miming the make it mine video).Omega Amigo was also recorded then & mixed at orinnoco by Will,Colin,Brian & me- all moving sliders & punching the tracks in & out live.I might get around to uploading the PH-ONE dub on youtube if you're intrested?R.McD

While the Will Sin cover is interesting (particularly the strange, cut-up vocals), I don't find it nearly as listenable as the Colin Angus cover, which fits in relatively well with the group's "En-Tact" era recordings.
