Definitely not an EP, Periphery III: Select Difficulty clocks in at more than an hour. Unlike the extended intros of past records, this time around the band gets right down to business with The Price Is Wrong. It’s intense and aggressive, but also packed with clever riffs and their trademark djent tendencies. The barrage continues with Motormouth. Periphery III: Select Difficulty is an impressive album. The band’s multi-faceted musicianship hits on all cylinders, with the arrangements showing a lot of diversity. While not as experimental as some of their past releases, Periphery still push plenty of musical boundaries, making it a challenging and satisfying release.

Periphery is the debut studio album by American progressive metal band Periphery, signed by Sumerian Records and released on April 20, 2010. Many songs on the tracklist had been written long before the release date-with some written by original lead vocalist Casey Sabol-but due to membership changes, the album was postponed on several occasions. Former vocalist Chris Barretto had nearly finished recording the album before he and the band parted ways months before its release

As Periphery develops their sound with each passing album, the true shining star has been Sotelo. Select Difficulty sees the vocalist at his most diverse and adventurous, delivering passionate hooks during melodic highs and devastatingly vicious vocal delivery during the record’s most extreme moments. Comparing his performance on Periphery with Select Difficulty is like night and day. Sotelo was once a source of controversy and negative criticism, but has since grown from freshman ringer to MVP and has delivered his finest performance to date.

Though some may find the metal might tiresome over Periphery III's hour-plus runtime, the drive to keep exploring outside of their stylistic box continues to be crucial to their success.
