The Rough Guide to African Disco is a world music compilation album originally released in 2013 featuring mainly 1970s and '80s African disco. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the album contains two discs: an overview of the genre on Disc One, and a "bonus" Disc Two highlighting Cameroonian artist Maloko. Disc One features five South African tracks, four Nigerian, two Ghanaian, and one each from Cameroon and France.

The title African Disco probably refers more to the discotheque, a club specifially for dancing, than the actual style of music known as disco. Not that there aren't similarities: funky bass, made for dancing, and so on, but this is African music first and foremost. All tracks date from the '70s, concurrent with the American and European disco scenes, but come from all over Africa, providing a range of styles. The highlight of the set comes from the best known artist: Tony Allen playing with Fela Kuli's band throws down on the nearly 12-minute-long "Afro-Disco-Beat

And indeed, it sure is! African Disco Juice. London's Midnight Riot have a had a steady stream of releases throughout 2017, with several excellent compilations exploring the many shades of nu-disco music: such as last month's fabulous Japanese Boogie & Disco Reworks - Volume 2, Balearic Headspace - Volume 2, back in August plus Joutro Mundo presents - Brazilian Boogie & Disco Reworks - Volume Duo in the middle of the year.
