Is the Is Are is the second studio album by American indie rock band DIIV, released on February 5, 2016 on Captured Tracks. Self-produced by vocalist and guitarist Zachary Cole Smith, the album was recorded at Strange Weather Recording Studio and The Bunker, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was preceded by the singles, "Dopamine", "Bent (Roi's Song)", "Under the Sun" and "Is the Is Are".
Produced by Zachary Cole Smith. Album Is the Is Are. Is the Is Are Lyrics. You ain't the first to realize You ain't the first to look in my eyes. Over my head and positive I have a gift that i’ll never give. You ain't the first You ain't the first.
DIIV's long-awaited follow-up to Oshin is not the radical break in style that Zachary Cole Smith had promised: While it's mostly about getting high and it sounds exactly like DIIV, it finds more interesting ways to do both of those things. Call it Requiem for a Dream-pop, dedicated to a gorgeous yet unglamorous portrayal of addiction. Though not the Tago Mago or Tusk-style double album Smith originally planned, Is the Is Are makes unusual demands for an indie rock record. With each of the five singles in its protracted rollout, DIIV confirmed they were making their proprietary sound deeper and more immersive. The revelation of a 17-song tracklist promised scatter and sprawl, like a hybrid of Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Disintegration. However, this is more in the spirit of Seventeen Seconds to Pornography: gray, gloomy textures, depressive fatalism.
Highlights (including Dopamine, Is the Is Are, and the aching Mire (Grant’s Song) ) don’t break the mood so much as surface like moments of clarity in the middle of a dream. Shimmering, immersive, and buoyed by a light sense of melancholy throughout, Is the Is Are is filled with stunning purpose, distilling the jangly shoegaze outfit’s early sound into something atmospheric but focused-despite its palatial, 17-track length. Highlights (including Dopamine, Is the Is Are, and the aching Mire (Grant’s Song) ) don’t break the mood so much as surface like moments of clarity in the middle of a dream.
Is the Is Are is almost better experienced in small doses, three or four songs at a time. The album feels meticulously thought out, with DIIV both opening up their sound and then honing in on the sharper moments they discover. Smith is a careful student of indie rock history and clearly wanted to make something that could fit alongside classic records by legendary auteurs. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make a classic record, but it’s also okay to fall short of that goal. Is the Is Are isn’t a grand redemptive masterpiece that will change the minds of those who wrote off the band.
