Regardless, Grieg’s music is presented here with plenty of fervor, nationalism, and classicism often evocative of the oft-paired Schumann piano concerto in the same key; but Kovacevich plays clear and precise, with great lyrical phrasing, and plenty of bravura and weight required of this showy work. The BBC orchestra equally has great romantic thrust featuring neat brass and woodwind licks, perhaps not the playfully equal partners as in the Schumann Piano Concerto, but the piano and orchestra are still recorded well together.
