Assessing the split LP from Witchmaster and Voidhanger purely on the virtue of its title, I expect the content is going to be bleak. I’m not too optimistic either these days. By their last though, Infernal Morbid Death the Warsaw band has seized the album’s titular theme in nearly six minutes worth of black metal. I would welcome better production on the Witchmaster side, at least something a bit cleaner, but the embittered mix may be by design. The band has been hammering tracks for two decades and its clear that they know the rotten thing in their craw by name and reputation. I am slightly less bullish on Voidhanger, an Australian band that in the interest of full disclosure, I’ve never heard before.

Both of these bands infuse their music with the poison of black metal, along with the energy of a power plant in overdrive, but as you’ll find out, their approaches to the task of firing up an audience follow different strategies. Voidhanger have released two full albums so far - Wrathprayers (2011) and Working Class Misanthropy (2013) - plus a 2012 EP (The Antagonist). On this split they contribute three new songs. Both are also members of band IPERYT, who will release a new album in 2017.

Witchmaster are a long-running blackened-death quartet who mix a raw and barbaric sound and a surprisingly punky edge, with a keen ear for some thrashy riffs to bash your face in and turn your brain to jelly. After flirting with BDSM themes on 2002’s Masochistic Devil Worship, the group really hit their stride when Behemoth‘s Inferno took over on the drumset, first performing on 2014’s seminal Antichristus Ex Utero. Fortunately, Voidhanger immediately redeem things with Burnout Hearts Exhibition, the first of their three tracks. Like the performance he delivered on 2013’s Working Class Misanthropy, Warcrimer’s scream-shouts are downright maniacal here, and the testicle-crushing groove that follows the thrashing death metal riffs of the verses is equally noteworthy.
