I am embarking on my 1st solo Tour, Black Bottom Revue: A Rock n Roll Cabaret in Spring 2014. I’ll be teaming up with some of fierce artists to bring you a feast for the eyes and ears. In the past couple of years I’ve been able to do some pretty cool things - Make a cameo appearance in a feature film and contribute songs to it’s soundtrack - Perform on European television via Franco-German music and art channel Arté.
Tamar-kali may hail from Brooklyn, but her influences are global. Born Tamara Colletta Brown, this New York musician added the name Kali, the Hindu deity associated with death, war and eternal energy, to show that she means business. The daughter of a musician, Tamar-kali followed a range of musical styles growing up, from folk to punk. It was the later that ultimately helped shape her personal style and direction, a vibe she brings to Dee Rees’ Pariah. And Tamar-kali has been calling the shots in her music and musical projects. Her recently released album Black Bottom is a powerful expression of her self and struggles. com, Rob Fields exclaims: Like Tina Turner, you get the feeling from listening to Tamar-kali’s debut album Black Bottom that she never did anything nice and easy.
It’s aggressive, melodic rock for the 21st century. What follows here is an extended conversation between Tamar-kali and Boldaslove. us contributor Jen Williams, during which they touch on many things including the significance of the title Black Bottom ; the influence of PJ Harvey; the surprising relationship between her songs Boot from an earlier EP and Pearl on this album; and tarot, to name a few. Sit back and enjoy this wide-ranging dialogue.
Rock Bottom is the second solo album by former Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. It was released on 26 July 1974 by Virgin Records. The album was produced by Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason, and was recorded following a 1973 accident which left Wyatt a paraplegic. He enlisted musicians including Ivor Cutler, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Laurie Allan, Mike Oldfield and Fred Frith in the recording.
