Maria Callas was born in New York on 2nd December 1923, the daughter of Greek parents. Her name at birth was Maria Kalogeropoulou. When she was 13 years old, her parents separated. Her mother, who was ambitious for her daughter’s musical talent, took Maria and her elder sister to live in Athens. There Maria made her operatic debut at the age of just 15 and studied with Elvira de Hidalgo, a Spanish soprano who had sung with Enrico Caruso. Maria, an intensely dedicated student, began to develop her extraordinary potential.
Callas, Maria (1923–1977). American opera singer whose powers of vocal interpretation sparked a revival of classical coloratura roles and gave rise to unforgettable recordings considered among the most significant contributions to opera performance in the 20th century. Name variations: Mary, Marianna. Deluged, now, with offers to sing, Callas spent most of 1948 touring Italy, managed by Serafin. It was during this time that she developed the role, with Serafin, for which she would come to be known: Norma. The early 1950s were also the years Callas became notorious for her temperament. Her famous rivalry with Tebaldi, another great soprano, dates from this time, and there were other singers who grew resentful of the public attention she drew.
Maria Callas, Commendatore OMRI (/ˈkæləs/; Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας; December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was an American-born Greek soprano. She was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations
Her real name was Maria Kalogeropoulous. Her parents were Greek. When she was fourteen, she and her mother returned to Greece. Maria studied singing at the national conservatory in Athens. The well-known opera singer Elvira de Hidalgo chose Maria as her student. SHIRLEY GRIFFITH: In nineteen forty-one, when she was seventeen, Maria Callas was paid to sing in a major opera for the first time. Three years later, Callas decided to teach young opera singers. In the early nineteen seventies, she taught twelve classes at the Juilliard School in New York. Parts of these classes were released as records. Terrence McNally wrote a play about Maria Callas and her opera students called "Master Class. SHIRLEY GRIFFITH: Maria Callas sang in many cities in Europe, the United States and East Asia in nineteen seventy-three and seventy-four.
The timeless and unrivaled Maria Callas. Half a century after her passing, the singer is still in the limelight, leading us to believe we know already all there is about the Divina assoluta. Her ability to interpret a wide variety of different roles truly set Maria Callas apart, establishing her as a phenomenon, an operatic diva. She was able to fully exploit the dramatic strength of her low vocal range as much as the high and bright notes of her high range. In 1949, she astounded critics by interpreting in the same week two very different roles: that of Brünnhilde, powerful goddess and warrior in Wagner's Die Walküre, and the delicate and romantic Elvira in Bellini's I Puritani. Nothing", she once confided to her sister Jackie. Maria Callas spent her final years alone, a recluse in her Paris apartment, mourning the death of of Aristote Onassis, the lover she never married. She passed away in Paris on 16 September 1977.
Background and Early Life. American opera singer Maria Callas was born Cecilia Sophia Anna Maria Kalogeropoulos in New York City on December 2, 1923, a date confirmed by the attending physician for the delivery and what is believed to be her birth certificate. Over the years, discrepancies and confusion have arisen concerning Callas's birth date. Callas herself, along with school records, had stated she was born on the 3rd while her mother had claimed the 4t. Her parents, George and Evangelia, were Greek immigrants who eventually shortened their last name to Callas by the time of Maria's christening.
