La traviata (Italian:, The Fallen Woman) is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La Dame aux camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils. The opera was originally titled Violetta, after the main character. It was first performed on 6 March 1853 at the La Fenice opera house in Venice.

When La Traviata was premiered in 1853 at La Fenice in Venice, the work first encountered the incomprehension of the audience, shocked by this opera which turns a courtesan into a tragic heroin. Inspired by Alexandre Dumas's La Dame aux camélias, La Traviata has yet become one of Verdi's most beloved operas. Its overture, choruses and arias are among the best-known pieces of the classical music repertoire. The story of La Traviata gathers two people, Violetta – a famed courtesan suffering from phtisis – and Alfredo, a young nobleman.

It’s fair to say that Verdi was playing hard to get when it came to his grand opera Aida. He was being pursued seemingly constantly by Ismail Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt and Sudan, to write for various state events, the opening of the Suez Canal being one of them. When the Cairo Opera House was being unveiled in 1869, Verdi finally agreed to compose something. Even then, he asked for a phenomenal fee, almost as if trying to price himself out of the market. Fee agreed, though, he set about working on an opera with a specially commissioned Egyptian archaeology theme
