Description

Classic Soul Album Series Funkadelic's 1974 release "Standing on the Verge of getting it On" is arguably their tightest set with the young Eddie Hazel's.

Funkadelic were the vanguard for George Clinton’s vision of the Thang empire that stretched across nearly a dozen acts, and was given its own genre of music, P-Funk. Clinton had seen earlier success with his vocal group the Parliaments, but Funkadelic allowed him to hone a group of musicians to go alongside his vocalists. In the process they made some mind-blowing music that today is considered to be some of the peaks of both the rock and soul canon.

Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On. 3:17. You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure.

Celebratory Druggy Exuberant Fun Lively Playful Rousing Sensual Sleazy. In general, compared to the sometimes too polite Cosmic Slop, Standing on the Verge is a full-bodied, crazy mess in the best possible way, with heavy funk jams that still smoke today while making a lot of supposedly loud and dangerous rock sound anemic. Check out "Alice in My Fantasies" if a good example is needed - the whole thing is psychotic from the get-go, with vocals as much on the edge as the music - or the wacky, wonderful title track.

But STANDING is the better and stronger album, and easily Funkadelic's most consistent work since the classic MAGGOT BRAIN. Even though the band's members were, at the time, doing double duty in the more commercially oriented Parliament, Funkadelic maintained it's complete allegiance here to wildly experimental, rock-influenced music. The album begins with a lighthearted poem read by two band members, their voices sped up to sound like the Chipmunks  . In my book, it's their best album period. I'm aware that ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE was their most commercially successful and MAGGOT BRAIN was, perhaps, their most critically acclaimed. Albums like HARDCORE JOLLIES and UNCLE JAM WANTS YOU, would give us some truly wonderful music as well, but this album stands out to me personally because I see it as Edward Earl Hazel's manifesto of his Guitar Godship.

Funkadelic is ranked number 288 in the overall artist rankings with a total rank score of 10,065. Members who like this artist also like: The Velvet Underground, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On. Funkadelic.

Most songs on this album pulsate forward at faster tempos with some of the best riffs Funkadelic has ever busted out. However, most of these songs lack variety, sticking to one main riff and continuing throughout the song. Luckily, unlike most Clinton efforts, the songs are a normal 2-4 minute range. The first 4 songs on the album are all about women. Fuzzy and Calvin trade vocals here. Standing On The Verge. Of Getting It On" (the title track), puts Funk in its purest form. Jimmy's Got A Little Bit Of Bitch In Him" is hilarious! "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" is a song that tells you about the power of positive and negative thinking.

Over a period of 12 years from their Westbound debut album to the release of 1981's the Electric Spanking of War Babies, Funkadelic, piloted by George Clinton, redefined the way that black music was recorded and presented. They scored 20 R&B; chart hit singles and a dozen chart albums, but their influence was far greater

Label Westbound Records.
