The album is a collection of songs that didn’t fit in the previous four albums of 2017 (Flying Microtonal Banana, Murder Of The Universe, Sketches Of Brunswick East and Polygondwanaland), as Stu Mackenzie, the band’s frontman, said in an interview: And the idea for the fifth one was to have all of the songs – they’re definitely not B-sides or anything.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is an Australian rock band formed in 2010 in Melbourne, Victoria. The band consists of Stu Mackenzie (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, flute, zurna, clarinet, saxophone, harmonica, sitar, baglama), Ambrose Kenny-Smith (vocals, harmonica, keyboards), Cook Craig (guitar, bass, vocals), Joey Walker (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals), Lucas Skinner (bass, keyboards), Michael Cavanagh (drums, percussion), and Eric Moore (drums, percussion, management)

Though not stylistically consistent, Gumboot Soup is one of the strongest batches of songs King Gizzard put out in 2017. A solid last album of what of the most hard-working band last year. Great work King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. 85. The perfect mix between smooth, laid-back king gizzard and crazy, psychedelic king gizzard. And, even if that sacrifices the cohesiveness of the album, I feel like it is worthy. It was the perfect closer to the band's busy 2017, having elements from each album that was released that year. When 2017 started, the guys in King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard unveiled a plan to release five albums before the year was out. As the year came to a close, they had unleashed four: the experimental Flying Microtonal Banana, which was played on homemade, finely tuned instruments; the sci-fi synth prog Murder of the Universe; a trippy soft jazz collabo with Mild High Club entitled Sketches of Brunswick East; and the ding (for King Gizzard anyway) Polygondwanaland, which the band gave away.

And while Gumboot Soup doesn’t directly exude Aussie pride and vigour, it most certainly gives this series an admirable send-off through its documentation of both a 2017 power-trip, and one of Australia’s most diverse discographies. Undergoing the task of recapping four records within a single album and still presenting something a tad detached from its individual components would be nigh impossible to do with any sense of grace
