Leonie Rysanek's empress is radiant, and Paul Schöffler gives a touching performance as the dyer Barak. Strauss and Hofmannsthal's fairytale opera is certainly a little unhinged, yet musically, it is an embarrassment of riches. Böhm's studio production, recorded in 1955 in Vienna with a legendary cast of singers and the Vienna Philharmonic on top form, is a major achievement. You can hear every last detail - the only downside being that the work is not complete, as Böhm accepted several abridgments (the same applies to the grandiose live recording from 1977!). The comprimarios are splendid, topped off or should I say bottomed out by Kurt Böhme's fine and menacing Spirit Messenger who banishes the wicked nurse to hades. Certain felicities in the Sawallisch recording are missing here however.
