Leopoldine "Leonie" Rysanek (14 November 1926 – 7 March 1998) was an Austrian dramatic soprano. Rysanek was born in Vienna and made her operatic debut in 1949 in Innsbruck. In 1951 the Bayreuth Festival reopened and the new leader Wieland Wagner asked her to sing Sieglinde. He was convinced that her unique, young and beautiful voice, combined with her rare acting abilities, would create a sensation. She became a star overnight, and the role of Sieglinde followed her for the rest of her career.

It is a good time to take some opera with me and yesterday I listened to a recording of a live 1972 Nabucco with the Dutch baritone Jan Derksen and the English soprano Pauline Tinsley. It was quite unbelievable the hear the sheer standard of the singing. Pauline's voice was never out of control, the loud/big notes simply cut through the orchestra strongly, excitingly and beautifully like we are used to from La Nilsson. Another piece of the Jigsaw - The sound isn't brilliant but it cannot disguise the great performances of Leonie Rysanek as Sieglinde and Gunther Treptow, the Siegmund also on Furtwangler's Ring Cycle at La Scala in 1950, which I also have in my collection. I love live recordings and have most of the performances broadcast by Bavarian Radio from Bayreuth over the years.
