Bruiser Queen puts the Rock into the Rock N Roll Craft Show. Bruiser Queen will be re-releasing its third album, Heavy High, on New York City label Velvet Elk Records next week, on Friday, November 16. The band’s previously independent album will be given a new life with five added tracks, as the group signed to that label earlier this year. It’s a fitting reward for a band that’s worked for several years to find a new home. Some singles would follow that release, before their full-length return with the indie Heavy High in 2017. That album grew some fans within certain music circles and, Potter says, that’s where things got good. The label deal, he says, is something we’ve been working on for a little bit. We did a residency in New York last year and became friends with Blackheart Records, which is Joan Jett’s label.

Bruiser Queen is the collaborative effort of singer/guitarist, Morgan Nusbaum, and drummer Jason Potter. They began winning over audiences in 2012 with the release of their first full-length album titled Swears, which preceded the highly praised In Your Room 7 /EP (2013, Certified PR Records), and 2014’s Sweet Static (Boxing Clever Records). Album singles On The Radio and Some Girl’s Ghost were Village Voice Pazz and Jop chart winners in 2014.

Louis, Missouri’s very own Bruiser Queen finished off their latest tour in none other than Dallas, Texas. Radio UTD got the chance to chat with Jason Potter (drummer and vocalist) about their soon-to-release album Heavy High, their songwriting process, and the new biosphere of life on tour. Radio UTD: How is this release different from your previous works? Jason: I would say most readily the production work on it.

Bruiser is a 2000 French horror-thriller film written and directed by George A. Romero and starring Jason Flemyng, Peter Stormare and Leslie Hope. Bruiser was filmed in Toronto. Henry Creedlow (Jason Flemyng) is a businessman who lives a unhappy life; his high-strung, contemptuous wife Janine (Nina Garbiras) is indifferent to him which leads to him having fantasies about suicide.

The band does manage a few solid tunes, particularly the Teenage Fanclub-style playfulness of "Lorraine's Car" and the punky "Pretty New," but overall Bruiser Queen is a botch. The trio would rebound with 1999's far superior Goodbye, So What.
